An exceptional Georgian Silver gilt rattle
An exceptional Georgian Silver gilt rattle complete with original bells and teething coral
The top formed as a whistle and the main part of the rattle with exquisite engraved rope and bead work and with a scrolling band of flowers. The bell supports are scrolling snakes (the symbol for eternal life).
Hallmarked in London in 1809 and with the maker's mark J.A, almost certainly for James Aitken, who was known as a maker of buckles and wine labels, which would fit with the exceptional skill required to produce the decoration on this piece, and he was known to be working in London circa 1793.
We have described this rattle as exceptional partly due to the quality of the decoration but, perhaps more importantly, due to the fact it is in such extraordinary condition complete with bells and teething coral.
